At the end of the day, regardless of how passionate you are about your work, you need to get paid. It’s what keeps food on the table and the lights on in the office! We hear a lot from the field service businesses we speak to that one of the main challenges of running their company is getting customers to pay on time (or in some unfortunate cases, at all).

Debt-chasing can be a time-consuming activity and we often hear that business owners find keeping track of customer debt difficult. Because of this, smaller debts can often be forgotten or ignored. Of course, letting the odd £50 go isn’t a problem in isolation, but if it’s happening a lot it can slowly cripple the profitability of a business. You know the old adage — look after the pennies and the pounds look after themselves!

To make it easier than ever for you to see exactly how much a customer owes you, we’ve introduced a new way of viewing debt. Now, when you navigate to a customer profile, you’ll see any monies owed to you in a red bubble on the property or invoice address tab. If you use your cursor to hover over the bubble, you’ll see a breakdown showing the age of the debt. This way, you can prioritise older debts that are in danger of going unpaid.

More ways of fighting debt

Looking for more ways to reduce debt? If you also have a payment gateway integration set up with Commusoft (we currently support Stripe, Worldpay and SumUp, but let us know if you use a different one and we’ll take it into consideration) you might want to take card details when booking a job. Doing this can help prevent you taking on customers who make a habit of not settling their bills as they’re rarely willing to provide payment info upfront.
